When I designed this space, I tried to consider each different user within it: children, elderly, mobility impaired, parents, students, etc. I integrated full ramp and lift access throughout the building with the journey throughout the building being the focal point of the project.
Variable study and community spaces are adaptable and ever-changing by using an open plan system with varying degrees of privacy in each zone. I included a transition space with lockers, so people with luggage can store it and travel unencumbered around the building; and gender-neutral toilets with multiple family/accessible toilets. My approach was to determine the program first and make this work with an accessible ramp because I wanted all users to be able to experience every part of the building. A translucent skin wraps the exterior around the bookshelves giving rise to a flickering facade that gives glimpses to the activities within.
